This presentation explains how to log in to MetaMask®, what to check before you sign in, and how to keep your wallet secure. It assumes you already have MetaMask installed as a browser extension or mobile app. Read every step carefully — wallets are your gateway to self-custody and require extra caution.
Logging in to MetaMask begins with ensuring you are interacting with the real application. Use the official website or app store pages to install the extension or mobile app; avoid popups or unsolicited links. When opening MetaMask for the first time on a device, choose “Import wallet” only if you already own a seed phrase, or “Create a wallet” to generate new credentials. Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase — anyone with that phrase can fully control your funds.
For returning users the login process is straightforward: open the MetaMask extension icon or mobile app, enter your password, and confirm. If you use a hardware wallet (such as a Ledger or Trezor), connect it and use the hardware path to sign in. MetaMask integrates hardware devices so private keys stay on the hardware; MetaMask only acts as a bridge for transactions.
- Confirm source: Navigate to the official MetaMask site or open the installed extension/app. Verify site address manually: bookmark official links for repeat use.
- Open MetaMask: Click the browser extension icon (top right) or open the mobile app from your device launcher.
- Enter password: Type your password (keep it strong and unique). If you forgot it, you must restore using your Secret Recovery Phrase; the password cannot be recovered otherwise.
- Hardware wallet: If using hardware, connect it now and follow prompts to unlock and select accounts.
- Network selection: Check the network (Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, etc.) before interacting with sites; wrong network can cause confusion when transacting.
After login, MetaMask shows your account address and balance. When a website requests a connection, MetaMask will prompt you to approve which account(s) to connect. Only connect with sites you trust — consider using a separate account for high-risk dapps. Approving a connection does not grant permission to move funds by itself; spending requires a separate transaction signature request, which you must review carefully.
If you experience issues logging in, consider these checks: confirm your extension is up to date, restart your browser or phone, try the browser’s profile without other suspicious extensions, or use the MetaMask support pages. If you suspect compromise, move assets to a new wallet immediately using a secure device and new Secret Recovery Phrase.
Finally, practice good operational security: use unique, strong passwords; enable device encryption and biometric locks on mobile; maintain backups in secure offline locations; and regularly review connected sites and permissions inside MetaMask settings. By following these steps you can safely access your wallet and reduce exposure to common threats.
